               EXT. A ROAD IN A WOOD, 18TH CENTURY JAPAN - MORNING

               It's a foggy morning and the trees are dripping.  A BLIND
               WOMAN in a worn, tattered and miss-matched outfit is walking
               down a dirt road, with A CANE to guide her steps.   She is
               wearing a mixture of Western, Chinese and Japanese clothes. 
               Her clothes do not match, she does not know what her clothes
               look like.  She wears period western women's boots, Chinese
               pants, a western men's collared shirt and a Japanese coat
               with long sleeves.  In addition to this, she wears a
               Christian cross necklace around her neck.

               She looks like she has been walking for a long time.  She
               moves to the side of the road and sits on an overturned mossy
               log to rest.  She sets her cane down about a foot in front of
               her.

               While she rests, a SMALL GANG of young men walk down the same
               path the blind woman walked down moments earlier.  They may
               work for the shogunate.  They carry swords and wear simple
               yet presentable clothes.  When they notice her, they silently
               gesture to each other while continuing to walk normally. 
               They decide to harass the woman.

               Sensing something is wrong, the woman tries to pick up her
               cane but one of the men kicks it out of her reach, another
               picks it up and tosses it into the woods.

                                   MAN #1

                         You wont be needing that anymore.

               The other men laugh.

                                   MAN #2
                             (in Japanese, no
                              subtitles)
                         I'm tired of you blind people
                         scraping my country's earth with
                         your sticks.

               The other men shout similarly themed threats and insults.

                                   BLIND WOMAN
                             (in Japanese, but with a
                              heavy accent, no
                              subtitles)
                         Leave me alone!  I'm warning you.

               They all laugh.

                                   BLIND WOMAN (CONT'D)
                             (in Japanese, no
                              subtitles)
                         Please.

                                   MAN #4
                             (in Japanese, no
                              subtitles)
                         You had better hope that god of
                         yours is merciful.

                                   BLIND WOMAN
                             (in English)
                         Please.

               Her speaking a foreign language is the last straw; two of the
               men draw their swords while the other two move to hold her
               down. In an elaborate move, the two with their swords drawn
               begin their attack before she is grabbed; an exercise in
               efficiency-getting the job done as quickly as possible. This
               appears to be a well rehearsed move for this gang.

               The woman's ear twitches and before the two men can grab her
               she gets the better of them.  This move puts the two men in
               the path of the two swords and they are killed.  The two
               surviving men gasp when they realize what they have done and
               move on to plan B, even more determined this time.
